Activities

Moheli is a 100% eco-tourism destination

Excursions

Moheli Lodge may organise all your excursions with professional guides and specialists. The National Marine Park of Moheli has a rich and exceptional variety of animals and plants. The Livingstone bat which are giant fruit eating bats with a span of up to 1,5 m and the Maki, the Comorian lemurs, are endemic species of Moheli. The entire area south of Moheli is a natural reserve, recognised since 1994 by the United Nations Environmental Programme as National Marine Park. The entire zone is now protected including the coral reefs, the giant sea turtles, the great dugong, and other Cetacea. For all these excursions we cooperate closely with local associations and guides that are well trained in issues dealing with bio-diversity. The main attractions are to observe the laying of eggs by the giant sea turtles at night and in the early morning hours, to observe and swim in all safety with the giant humpback whales of which approximately 1000 individuals visit the Comorian waters every year, to reproduce and educate their small ones, and, to observe the for Moheli endemic Giant Livingstone Bats.

Hiking and observation of nature

The National Marine Park of Moheli offers many opportunities to discover the treasures of biodiversity. You may choose between a hike in the tropical rain forest to observe the many birds such as the drongo, the Comorian falcon, the Mohelian pigeon, the blue parrot, and the Maki and Livingstone bats, and, a walk in the coastal forest, next to the sea and in the mangroves where you will cross many sea birds, waders, herons but also crabs and dogfish. All year long our guides identify new hiking tracks in the Mohelian mountain range that varies between see level tropical forests and 1000 meter high primary rain forest.

Fishing

For fishing enthusiasts Moheli offers great opportunities for high sea fishing. We will offer this opportunity in the near future with a fully secured boat. Indeed the open sea waters around Moheli offer a great potential with Tuna, Sea Bream (Dorade), Merlin, Barracuda, bonito, etc. But if you really want to have an unforgettable fishing experience, then we propose you to participate at a traditional fishing event with local fisher men and their laka, the Comorian pirogue with a balancing beam.

Diving

An exceptional diving experience!
The coral reefs of Moheli are not yet known very well by divers. Although they may be considered to be one of the most beautiful diving destinations if the Indian Ocean. Scientists have confirmed that Moheli has one of the richest and remarkable varieties of corals and tropical fish in the Mozambique channel. Different excellent diving spots have been identified such as the Mchaco Island which is classified by certain experts as one of the greatest diving spots in the world). We are currently developing our cooperation with professional diving organisations and will offer also the possibility to rent professional equipment and receive secure diving support.

Whale safaris

Each year about 1000 whales choose the waters of Moheli. The humpback whales are enormous whales of 30 to 40 tons and up to 17 meters long that live in the Antarctic and feed with plankton. In the beginning of the Antarctic winter around April they start their long journey of 6000 kilometers through the Mozambique channel reaching Moheli in June. Their stay lasts until October when they head back to their habitat in Antarctica. Your encounter with these peaceful unfortunately still hunted animals will be an unforgettable experience. Nowhere in the world one can observe and swim safely in warm waters with whales. Moheli Laka Lodge cooperates with the International Organisation for the Protection of whales “Megaptera” and who provides professional support by a specialist scientist during the whale season. In this way we ensure that whales are approached in a way that is safe and not disturbing and which fully respects the rules of nature. Our visitors to the whales may be proud of their ecological tourism and will know that they have contributed to a sustainable management of tourism.
