Each year about 1000 whales choose the waters of Moheli. The humpback whales are enormous whales of 30 to 40 tons and up to 17 meters long that living in the Antarctic and feeding on plankton. In the beginning of the Antarctic winter around April they start their long 6000 kilometer journey through the Mozambique channel reaching Moheli in June. Their stay here until October when they head back to their habitat in Antarctica.

Your encounter with these peaceful unfortunately still hunted animals will be an unforgettable experience. Nowhere in the world one can observe and swim safely in warm waters with whales. Moheli Laka Lodge cooperates with the International Organisation for the Protection of whales “Megaptera” and who provides professional support by a specialist scientist during the whale season.

This is how we ensure that whales are approached in a way that is safe and not disturbing and which fully respects the rules of nature. Our visitors to the whales may be proud of their ecological tourism and will know that they have contributed to a sustainable management of tourism.
